Only three major mines provide the region with emeralds. Today, the Kagem mine is one of the largest in the country. Gemfieds has owned it since 2008. The industry would generate $200 million each year. Gemfields, the world leader in colorful gemstones, has a significant presence there. It also controls 75% of the Kagem mine.
Other big mining companies have made inroads into the Zambian emerald industry. Last year, Israeli billionaire diamond entrepreneur Lev Leviev ventured into the emerald business by purchasing 50% of the Grizzly mine.
